Love BBQ?

America's Favorite - Barbecue

Love BBQ? Summer is on the downswing and, I betcha, barbecue lovers all across America have been grilling like mad.  This has been one of those heatwave summers, so you know more people have been grilling in the backyard than slaving in the hot kitchen.

Did you know that the word “barbecue” has multiple meanings?  For example, it can represent a style of cooking meat over an open fire, a structure or framework for cooking, a food, a flavor, an outdoor social gathering, or a “manly” culinary art.  Men love to barbecue…somewhat analogous to how Tim the Toolman Taylor grunted about using tools in the popular 90′s TV series, Home Improvement.

Not only that, there are regional differences. Thanks to Food Network programming, we have become more familiar with the different types of barbecuing happening all around the country, like  people in the East and South generally have a preference for pork while in the West, folks love their beef ribs and brisket.  Some folks love dry rub, others prefer their meat drenched in their own “secret”  sauces; some like using different fueling woods or gas and others groove to the charcoal flavor.

The tradition of barbecuing in America goes way back…even our first president,  George Washington, wrote in his diaries about the many barbecues he attended and/or hosted.  Wonder if President Obama likes to barbecue?
